Bucks Education Aid
In March 2020 schools closed their doors to all but the children of key workers and the most vulnerable. Disadvantaged pupils are expected to be worst affected by the school closures because they are unlikely to have learning resources and access to social and cultural capital outside of school. Many in education are predicting that the current crisis will further widen the attainment gap.
While schools are doing all they can now to mitigate the impact of school closures, children are going to need more support than ever to catch up. That support will need to take many forms, and members of the local community working with schools to deliver skills sessions is one.
The support from the local community through High Wycombe Mutual Aid during the COVID-19 pandemic has been hugely encouraging. We have set up Bucks Education Aid to harness volunteer efforts beyond immediate needs as our community recovers from this.
Our project: We are providing a volunteer recruitment service to local primary schools. Our volunteers are supporting skills development in reading, comprehension, and basic numeracy. These sessions are currently taking place face-to-face-during school hours. We are hoping to potentially expand this to online support (Zoom skills support sessions) in the future.
Working with Loudwater Combined School
We currently have twelve volunteers who are working across the school focusing on supporting children with reading and comprehension skills as well as basic maths skills.
“This is developing into a truly valuable experience; for school staff, pupils and I hope for the Volunteers”
Clare Cunnington, Headteacher at Loudwater Combined School
Working with other schools in the future
We are keen to offer this volunteer recruitment service to other local schools. If you think there is a primary school in High Wycombe who could use our service please share this offer with them.
